Running a business is often seen as exciting, rewarding, and full of purpose.

But there’s another side to business ownership that isn’t talked about enough and it’s something I see every day in my work. The mental load.

When you’re struggling in your business, it rarely looks dramatic from the outside. In fact, many of the business owners I work with appear to be doing well. The numbers might be strong. The business might be growing.  Yet behind the scenes, it’s a different story.

One day they feel clear, capable, and in control.  The next, they’re questioning decisions, second guessing themselves, and wondering if they’re getting it wrong.

When you run a business, you are the decision maker.

You carry the responsibility for the direction, the finances, the people, and the results. There’s rarely anyone above you to sense check ideas with or share the weight of those decisions.

Over time, that pressure builds.

When you’re struggling in your business, it’s often not because you’re incapable. It’s because you’re carrying too much, for too long, without the space to process it.

Many business owners quietly ask themselves: “Why do I feel like this when everything looks fine”

The answer is simple. Because you’re holding a lot together, often on your own.

When thinking time disappears

One of the biggest challenges I see is the complete lack of thinking time.

Your days are filled with clients, emails, team issues, and deadlines. There is always something urgent.

What gets pushed aside are the bigger, more important questions
What do I actually want from this business now
What does success look like at this stage
What is getting in my way

Without space to think, it’s easy to stay busy but feel stuck.

And that’s often the point when you’re struggling in your business. Not because nothing is happening, but because everything is happening without direction.

Why coaching isn’t a luxury, it’s a tool

This is where coaching comes in.mmNot as a last resort, but as a practical tool for running a business well.

The people I work with aren’t failing. They are capable, driven, and ambitious. What they need is space to think clearly, a place to speak openly, and the right level of challenge.

Coaching provides that.

It helps you build confidence in your decisions, recognise unhelpful patterns, and move from constant firefighting to leading with more clarity.

It also brings something many people underestimate. Accountability.

When you are accountable to someone else, things shift. Ideas turn into action.

You don’t have to do it alone

There is a shift happening.

More business owners are recognising that getting support is not a weakness. It is part of being an effective leader.

In fact, the strongest leaders I work with are the ones who choose not to carry everything on their own.

When you’re struggling in your business, the answer is not to push harder or just get on with it.

It is to create space.
To step back.
To get the right support around you.

Because running a business will always come with challenges. But it should not feel like a constant weight.
